Here are a few more idea's from a buddy of mine who frequently goes up to San Francisco.
His recommendations are as follows:
Maybe Number 1 would be to get up to Twin Peaks. Depending on the fog,
you get a 360 degree view, including the ocean.
From Twin Peaks, it is pretty easy to drop northwest down the hill
into The Haight. The neighborhood above the Haight is filled with
awesome Victorian Houses. Haight itself has gotten pretty nasty, but
is worth a drive by.
Out at the end of Golden Gate Park, where it hits the ocean, there is
a really cool restaurant called the Cliff House. It's got a nice bar,
and all around the restaurant are great decks to watch the surf below.
A lot of people like to go across the Golden Gate to Sausalito. It's
kind of worth it, but mainly tourist shops. You can take a ferry from
down at the end of Market St. at the Ferry Building, or drive across the Golden Gate to Sausalito.
Also in this area of San Francisco is the whole Embarcadero, which runs along the bay
and under the Bay Bridge. You can go from Pac Bell Park in the south
up to Fisherman's Wharf in the north, and it also houses Pier 39.
Right along this way, you can walk up the back stairs to Coit Tower.
They are famous for being where the parrots live and are kind of
hidden. At the top of Coit Tower, good views of downtown and the
bay. From Coit Tower you can drop down southwest into North Beach and
Chinatown.
I also like checking out all the skyscrapers and massive hotels in the
financial district and Union Square. The architecture and fountains
and gardens are amazing.
Also Lombard street is the famous zig zag street if your interested, but gets a little backed up from time to time sometimes best to see it walking.
So here are just a few more suggestions.....Hope you enjoy your visit.
